If your credit or debit card has declined, but you aren't sure why, these are common reasons for payment failure:
- Insufficient Funds- There may not be enough funds in your account to complete the transaction.
- Incorrect Billing Address Entered- The billing address, zip code, or CVV entered may not match what your bank has on file.
- Card Expired- The card's expiration date may have passed.
- Fraud Protection- Your financial institution may block charges as a precaution if they multiple transactions as attempted in a short period, they finds the transaction unusual or outside of normal spending habits.
- Daily Limit Reached- Some cards have a daily spending or withdrawal limit that, if reached, will cause further transactions to decline.
If you're using a P-card or Government Purchase Card, these are the common reasons for payment failures:
- Merchant Category Code (MCC) Restrictions- the card is not authorized for purchases from certain types of businesses.
- Single Transaction Limit Exceeded- A maximum amount may be set per transaction, and the charge exceeds the limit.
- Cumulative Spending Limit Reached- there may be caps to total spending within a specific timeframe.
- Out-of-Scope Purchase- The item being purchased is outside the authorized purchase categories of the cardholder.
- Blocked Country or Regions- some of these purchase cards are restricted from being used in specific countries or online merchants based within said countries.
